2SD is a medium viscosity, oil-based vehicle that exhibits excellent abrasive suspension properties. When combined with SiC abrasive (up to 50% by weight), it is ready for use in bevel gear lapping machines (e.g. Gleason, Klingelnberg) to mate the ring and pinion set.  The base compound is a proprietary blend of oils, suspension agents, extreme pressure additives, and emulsifying agents. 2SD is mixed with silicon carbide abrasive in a size that matches the customer’s surface finish requirements. Typical sizes include F180, F240, and F320.

There are 3 liquid abrasives for the lapping of bearing balls and one polishing abrasive.

It is important to understand that the abrasive particle size is only one important factor; the hardness of the abrasive is very important, as is the chemical activity (only less so).

Oil-Free Honing Coolant

Process Research Products BAKELAP was developed to enable major ball companies to eliminate oil-based coolants from their operation. It allows a single aqueous ball cleaning system to be used regardless whether the balls are lapped in the traditional process between cast iron plates or the Noritake process using Bakelite wheels.

Process Research Products BAKELAP is a highly detergent, concentrated, water-based coolant used for ultrafine grinding known in the ball bearing industry as stone lapping, Noritake lapping, or Bakelite lapping.

The use of BAKELAP completely eliminates the use of oil in final ball lapping operation.  This eliminates oil misting which is environmentally unhealthy and could represent a fire hazard.

Non-Suspension, Oil-Based, Water Washable Lapping Vehicle

LAPFASTER LE-2 is an oil-based, non-suspension, low viscosity lapping vehicle. LAPFASTER LE-2 does not contain water, but can be cleaned with hot alkaline cleaner solutions. LAPFASTER LE-2 is an excellent general purpose lapping vehicle; it is especially recommended for lapping ceramic flats, phenolics, and most metals. 

Oil-Based Suspension Vehicle

PC is an abrasive carrier vehicle for use on lapping operations where excellent suspension characteristics combined with medium viscosity are required. PC mixed with diamond abrasive is especially suited for slurries used in the lapping of silicon nitride balls. PC’s excellent suspension characteristics help keep the diamond on the lapping plates leading to reduced lapping times.

Synthetic, Non-Suspension, Water-Based Lapping Vehicle

Prolap-16 ZP is a highly concentrated, very low viscosity water-soluble abrasive carrier vehicle designed for fast lapping of most ferrous and non-ferrous* metals, ceramics, glass, and plastics. Prolap-16 ZP is formulated as a non-suspension vehicle but has excellent abrasive carrying characteristics to promote uniform deposition on the lapping machine.

*For the lapping of reactive metals such as aluminum, Prolap W-2 should be used to minimize the potential for hazardous outgassing.

Synthetic Water-Based Lapping Vehicle

Prolap 19 is a highly concentrated, water-soluble abrasive carrier vehicle designed for fast lapping of most ferrous and non-ferrous* metals, ceramics, glass, and plastics. Prolap 19 is formulated as a non-suspension vehicle but has excellent abrasive carrying characteristics to promote uniform deposition on the lapping machine. Prolap 19 has also been formulated for easy water clean-up.

*For the lapping of reactive metals such as aluminum, Prolap W-2 should be used to minimize the potential for hazardous outgassing.
